Johnson’s work in the genre of Sci-fi is not exactly extensive. However, of the few Sci-fi movies to feature Johnson, Planet 51 was the biggest in terms of box office revenue. The 2009 animated features a stacked cast including Gary Oldman, Jessica Biel, John Cleese, and a reunion with fellow Rundown co-star Seann William Scott. It generated an impressive $103 million at the box office.

7 ‘Moana’ ($643 Million) - Musical

Dwayne Johnson’s 2016 animated musical Moana was met with both critical and commercial acclaim. Generating $643 million at the box office, the Disney feature not only allowed Johnson the chance to embrace his Polynesian roots as the mythical hero Maui, but was also the recipient of multiple accolades, including Best Original Song at the Oscars and Top Sound Track at the American Music Awards.

6 ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ ($335 Million) - Fantasy

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was Johnson’s foray into the genre of fantasy. The epic tale was met with a large box office of $335 million, surpassing its predecessor. Though the film was met with mixed reviews, receiving a mid to low score on Rotten Tomatoes, other critics called Dwayne Johnson along with Michael Cain “among the most likable of actors.” That kind of praise is nothing to shake a stick at.

5 ‘The Game Plan’ ($146 Million) - Sports

Dwayne Johnson has always had athletics in his blood. The Be Cool star has a well-documented history with the world of sports. So, it’s no surprise that Johnson has starred in a few sports related flicks. Among the sports films to star, “The People’s Champ,” the biggest grossing was 2007s The Game Plan. The film gave Johnson a chance to flex both his comedic chops while donning the ol’ jersey and cleats, living out a dream that had never fully been achieved. The Disney film made $146 million at the box office from a mere $22 million budget.

4 ‘Skyscraper’ ($304.9 million) - Thriller

2018’s Skyscraper was Johnson’s highest grossingthriller. Though the film generated $304 million at the box office, Skyscraper was considered a box office bomb, as it had a production budget of $125 million. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising Johnson while also criticizing the film’s plot, drawing comparisons to Die Hard and other similar films.

3 ‘Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle’ ($962 Million) - Comedy

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle has the distinction of being the highest grossing Sony Pictures feature of all time (domestically), along with being the highest grossing comedy to feature Dwayne Johnson. Bringing in a hefty $962 million in worldwide, the film teams Johnson with Jake Black, Karen Gillan and good buddy Kevin Hart. The comedy filled romp was so well received that it would be followed by Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019, making it the third entry in the series. The film was also the 10th highest grossing film of 2019… let’s face it, nothing was going to beat a certain superhero-laden film that also happened to grace big screens in 2019.

2 ‘Rampage’ ($428 Million) - Video Game Adaptation

Much like early comic book adaptations, video game movies have not fared well on the big screen. Box office duds such as Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, (the less said about the disastrous 2005 Doom, the better, though some say it may have been "weirdly brilliant"), have not made it an enviable task for producers and directors to adapt a popular video game. However, 2018’s Rampage dared to become one of those video game films that broke the trend and, in terms of being Johnson’s highest grossing video game film, it did. The adaptation of the 1986 Midway classic, generated $428 million and was the best-reviewed live-action video game film in the history of Rotten Tomatoes until the release of Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

1 ‘Furious 7’ ($1.5 Billion) - Action

One of the biggest action franchises today, the 7th entry in the Furious films franchise was the highest grossing action film to feature Dwayne Johnson. Bringing home a staggering $1.5 billion at the box office, Furious 7 was Johnson’s second time playing Hobbs. Though Dwayne and his association with the franchise (proper) are seemingly over, the role of Hobbs is likely far from over.
