Comedian John Mulaney checked himself into rehab for his battle with cocaine and alcohol addiction. Rather than demand details or make crude, inappropriate jokes at his expense, Twitter is standing behind him and sending positive messages regarding his recovery.

Fans are surprisingly making social media for Mulaney to return to, and it's the kind of understanding that 2020 needs right now.

Don't Come For Mulaney

According to People, Mulaney has battled with alcohol abuse since he was only 13. That long-lived struggle was met with kindness as his fans spoke on the news via Twitter.

Author and podcast host Jenna Busch stated the comfort Mulaney has given his supporters during the length of quarantine, "Hey @mulaney! Your @Netflix specials have gotten us all through the pandemic. I hope knowing how much support you have from your fans will help you get through treatment."

Now, the Big Mouth voice actor can count on those whom he gave hope to in their difficult times.

EPSN2 host Katie Nolan asked others to reflect on the strength it took for Mulaney to take care of himself, "let the news of john mulaney be a reminder to us all that we are going through a collective trauma with this pandemic, and for many of us that’s on top of struggles we were already having. check on your people. asking for help isn’t cowardly, it’s courageous."

Managing Addiction

Another Twitter user said how addiction isn't simply over once someone reaches sobriety, "Addiction is not a thing that is overcome. It is managed. You are an addict no matter how long you've been sober. John Mulaney is evidence of that, and I wish him, and anyone else struggling with their recovery, well in their journey."

Others dealing with sobriety connected with Mulaney over the fear of relapse. Twitter user  Magda Cychowski advised those making fun of the comedian to come up with some tasteful material, "Hey! I'm just shy of 5 months of sobriety and it's the hardest/most shameful thing I've had to admit to myself/do and joking about John Mulaney is! not! chill!"

An open member of AA discussed the difficulties that partner long-term sobriety, "My first sponsor said, "when I woke up on my aa bday and had 10 years sober, I thought to myself 'if I can go 10 years without drinking, I must not be an alcoholic!!' and then immediately realized 'i better get to a meeting, I'm DEFINITELY an alcoholic."

He's coming back to a community that only wants the best for him, and we wish him much-deserved empathy during this time.
