The 2003 holiday film has left an enduring legacy behind it, with fans laughing and gushing over some of the more memorable scenes even to this day.

Hugh Grant, who had a starring role in the film, has always been open about his experiences on film sets. While he loved playing his role in The Undoing, he wasn’t so keen on playing the British Prime Minister in Love Actually for one reason: filming one of the most famous scenes in the movie filled him with dread, and he put it off until he absolutely had to do it.

Love Actually is one of the most famous and popular Christmas movies of modern times. In fact, some fans think of it as the perfect Christmas film.

The story follows several interconnected characters as they deal with their love lives in the lead up to Christmas in busy London. There are several British stars in the film, including Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister of England and one of the most sought-after bachelors in the country. His character falls in love with a girl who comes to work at his residence, Number 10 Downing Street.

If you’ve seen this iconic Christmas movie, then you probably already know what scene Hugh Grant hated filming. It features the Prime Minister dancing to the song ‘Jump (For My Love)’ while alone at Number 10.

While Hugh Grant didn’t think much of the scene, it’s become perhaps the most famous moment in the film.

As a viewer, you do have to suspend belief during the scene (could you really imagine Boris Johnson dancing around the residence like that?). But that’s what Christmas movies are supposed to be about anyway: magic.

Hugh Grant Kept Putting Off Rehearsals For The Famous Scene

After reading the script, Hugh Grant was not keen on dancing. According to the film’s director Richard Curtis, with whom Grant had worked on Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary, he decided he did not want to partake in the scene and so kept putting off the rehearsals.

“He kept on putting it off, and he didn’t like the song—it was originally a Jackson 5 song, but we couldn’t get it—so he was hugely unhappy about it,” Curtis explained (via Mental Floss).

How The ‘Love Actually’ Scene Turned Out In The End

So how do you get a movie star to film a scene that he loathes? Richard Curtis revealed, in one of the more surprising facts about Love Actually, that they had to wait until the final day of shooting to film the scene, as Grant continued to put it off.

It seemed, by that time, Grant had somewhat warmed to the idea and did the scene as he was supposed to. He even ended up singing along with the words.

Curtis explained that filming the scene went really well and was painless from a filmmaker’s point of view. But how did Grant feel about it?

What Hugh Grant Had To Say About The Scene

According to Digital Spy, Hugh Grant believes that the dancing Prime Minister scene was “the most excruciating scene ever committed.”

Even though he participated in the scene as he was supposed to, he didn’t really enjoy performing it. It seems more like he just wanted to get it out of the way and put it behind him.

“It wasn't easy for an Englishman in his 40s to do at 7 in the morning, stone-cold sober,” Grant added.

Hugh Grant’s Opinion Of ‘Love Actually’

Hugh Grant was never a fan of the dancing scene, and sadly for fans of Love Actually, it seems he’s not in love with the film itself either. Digital Spy revealed that the British actor admitted that he doesn’t “know why Love Actually is still so popular.”

The star also confessed that he has “no idea” what actually happened in the movie.

While this is bad news for fans of the festive flick, since it likely means we’re never getting a reunion with the original cast, we have to admire Grant for his commitment to his job and his ability to perform a scene that he didn’t personally believe in. That’s the mark of a great actor!
