The Kardashians inked a lucrative deal back in 2011 with Sears that would see their very own clothing line — appropriately titled Kardashian Kollection — stocked in all of the retailer’s stores, and while things were profitable in the beginning, sales quickly started dropping from year-to-year.

Before Sears parted ways with the family in 2015, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe would literally wear their collection at events, during the filming of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, for nights out with friends — practically everywhere to promote and plug their line of apparel as much as they could.

One of the reasons why the Kardashian Kollection stood no chance to last in the fashion industry was simply down to many of its customers complaining that the material used to make their apparel was anything but acceptable.

It was also said that the people responsible for making the clothes were being paid below the minimum wage, which evidently caused the Kardashians to receive the blame.

What Happened to The Kardashian Kollection?

The Kardashians were probably the biggest they had been in 2011. Kim married her then-husband Kris Humphries, Khloe had settled down with Lamar Odom, Kourtney was having another baby, and their reality show - including all spin-offs - had done tremendous numbers for the E! network.

So when the family was approached to helm their own fashion line, the idea seemed like a great business move, which will have undoubtedly earned the famous clan a fortune.

The Kardashian Kollection included everything from accessories to shoes, denim, swimwear, clothing, intimates, and home lines stored at Sears, and from the growing numbers that the girls were pulling in sales in their first year, it seemed as if their clothing line actually stood a chance to compete with other retail stores.

Again, the Kardashians weren’t the only celebs selling clothes as rapper Nicki Minaj had also inked a deal with Kmart to sell her own range of apparel, putting her in direct competition with Kim and her sisters.

"Together with Sears we have created an exclusive collection that will reflect Kim, Khloe and Kourtney's bold sense of fashion," Australian entrepreneur Bruno Schiavi said in a statement in 2011. "Customers and fans will have a chance to share in all things Kardashian."

Kim went on to add: "Fashion is such a huge part of my life and I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to design the Kardashian Kollection with my sisters and Jupi.  We worked really hard to create an incredible, price friendly collection and are so excited to see our fans' reactions to the designs.”

It’s unclear whether the Kardashians agreed to wear the Kardashian Kollection in public to help drive more sales since they were practically seen wearing their line of apparel everywhere they went, and while the free publicity definitely helped increase sales, it wasn’t all too long before the girls were receiving a ton of bad press.

Many people were furious over the poor material used to stitch the clothes, with some even demanding their money back.

“Uh, I did not just pay $60 to wear this Kardashian Kollection dress that’s already ripped in three places,” one annoyed customer said on Twitter.

“What a mistake I did here. Guys, please don’t waste your money on the Kardashian Kollection line. The skirt I ordered looks nothing like it did online — absolutely cheaply made and not worth the money,” another chimed in.

On top of that, TMZ claimed that there was an investigation going on at the Chinese factories where the fashion line was being produced, with insiders claiming workers behind the Kardashian Kollection were earning no more than $1 per hour and would work up to 84 hours per week.

With the estimated $60 million the family was believed to have generated between 2011 and 2012, it was quite scandalous to hear that the Kardashians were allowing this to go on — particularly since their name is attached to the fashion line.

“The institute for Global Labour and Human Rights confirms with TMZ … they have launched an investigation, amidst claims the Kardashians’ products are produced in factories reeking of stench from sewage, with temperatures north of 100 degrees,” the publication wrote. “An official from the organization tells TMZ, conditions in the factories that manufacture Kardashian products are ‘horrific.’”

In May 2015, Sears announced they had parted ways with the Kardashians, resulting in the end of their four-year partnership.

The remaining clothes from the Kardashian Collection were sold at discount prices for the rest of the year, and though many deemed this as a bad business move for the family, to begin with, let’s not act like they didn’t make millions in revenue after all was said and done.

Despite the bad press and bad customer feedback, the cheaply made fashion line made these girls a lot of money.
