Music fans naturally expect singers to love their songs as much as the world does. So when a pop star comes out and admits that they can’t stand one of their own songs—and it’s usually one that made them famous or is adored by fans—it’s always a huge surprise.
Ariana Grande has joined the ranks of celebrities who opened up about disliking one or more of their songs. She revealed that she wasn’t a fan of her debut single ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ which is now ten years old. Looking back at the song, it’s definitely different from Grande’s current style and stands out like a sore thumb in her repertoire. Keep reading to find out why Grande hated her debut single and has since removed it from her VEVO page on YouTube.

'Put Your Hearts Up'
In 2011, Ariana Grande debuted her first single. ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ was aimed at Grande’s core fans at the time—tweens who may have started following her after seeing her star on the Nickelodeon show Victorious as Cat Valentine. With lyrics along the lines of, “If we give a little love, maybe we can change the world,” the song tried to inspire young people to make a change through love.
It’s been a whole decade since this song was released and it’s safe to say that Grande’s style has changed dramatically, both in terms of her look and her sound. Looking back at the single, the pop star doesn’t have fond memories of her debut record.
Finding It “Inauthentic”
One of the most interesting things that most fans don't know about Ariana Grande is that she doesn't love her debut single. In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Grande revealed that the song “felt so inauthentic and fake.” She described how it was geared towards kids and how everything about it felt manufactured.
The song still features Grande’s signature strong vocals and four-octave vocal range but it has a distinctly bubble-gum sound, which has essentially been absent from Grande’s music ever since!

The Video “Straight Out Of Hell”
The video accompanying the song was perhaps the worst part for Grande, who describes it as being “straight out of hell.”
For the video, they gave me a bad spray tan and put me in a princess dress and had me frolic around the street,” she recalled (via Insider). “The whole thing was straight out of hell. I still have nightmares about it and I made them hide it on my Vevo page."
The video is a far cry from Grande’s current work and begins with her releasing a butterfly from a jar before strolling down a city street singing about love and positivity.
Stepping Away From The Bubble-Gum Sound
A huge change of direction for Grande's musical style came in 2013 when she released her single ‘The Way’ featuring Mac Miller. Sporting her famous ponytails, Grande rocked a noticeably different vibe on the RnB-inspired song.
According to Rap TV, Grande felt that ‘The Way’ has a much more mature tone at the time of recording. And she was right—‘The Way’ was eventually certified triple platinum and made it to the U.S. Billboard Top Ten!

The Evolution Of Her Image
Her sound hasn’t been the only element of her brand to transform over the years. Grande’s look has also changed drastically from 2011, when she appeared in the ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ video with red hair and a princess dress.
Grande is known for her signature long hair, which she typically wears in a ponytail. Throughout the different eras of her career so far, it has been blends of brown and blond, without ever reverting back to the red tones that she had on Victorious.
Now older, Grande also wears much more mature clothes, has totally glammed her makeup routine, and takes care of her own spray tan. We live for this glow up!
Other Struggles Early In Her Career
In the beginning of her career, Grande struggled to come to terms with the sound that producers wanted her to have. She has also opened up about other struggles that she faced early on in her career, including battling mental health issues.
Addressing her fans on Instagram, Grande revealed the dark side of being newly famous: “The first few years of this were really hard on my mental health and energy. I was so tired from promo trips and was always losing my voice and never knew what city I was in when I woke up.”
As she’s gained success in the music industry, Grande has taken control over more aspects of her career, including her sound and her look, which has consequently has a positive effect on her mental health.
